VENTING SYSTEMS POSING PROBLEMSCarbon monoxide (CO)

Number 16 - 295 words - November 1994

Toronto: Government and industry representatives are scrambling to find a solution to a heating and appliance problem that may have health implications for residents of thousands of homes world-wide.

CONSUMER ADVISORY: PLASTIC GAS VENTING SYSTEMS UPDATE

Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations; November 14, 1994

Last year, the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations became aware of a number of failures of high-temperature plastic venting systems. MCCR subsequently issued consumer alerts (March 23rd and June 7th) informing the public of the potential hazards involved and advising homeowners with PLEXVENT, ULTRAVENT AND SEL-VENT plastic venting systems to have their systems checked immediately by a qualified contractor.

Since that time, the ministry has encouraged the manufacturers and ULC (Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada) to develop improved venting systems and enhanced testing procedures to verify the performance of these systems. Consumers should seek specific advice from the manufacturer of their appliance or the manufacturer's distributor as to the options available for their specific appliance.

Ontario is the first jurisdiction in North America to take action to resolve this problem and is continuing to work with industry and the ULC to find a long-term solution to the problem of vent failure.

Vent Manufacturers' telephone numbers:   (Effective Nov. 94)

PLEXVENT 1-800-218-7132
ULTRAVENT 1-800-499-1609
SEL-VENT 1-800-267-8178

Consumers may call either of the Ministry information numbers:
(416) 234-6008 (English) or (416) 234-6028 (French).
